IoMT – The Internet of Medical Things is the connected system of medical devices and applications that collect and send data to healthcare IT systems via online computer networks.
Although the Internet of Things technologies is poised to bring tremendous savings to the healthcare industry, the healthcare industry has been slow to adopt the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) – the technology that is poised to transform the way people are kept safe and healthy especially as the demand for innovation(s) to lower healthcare costs increase in the coming years. The IoMT will disrupt the industry as it will effectively help with monitoring, informing and notifying stakeholders with actual data toward detecting concerns, early intervention before they become critical.
Dramatic Growth in IoMT Devices Is Imminent
By 2021, the IoT Healthcare Market will reach an astronomical $136 billion worldwide. Currently, there are approximately six-million medical devices in use that are connected to and monitor various parts of the body to inform healthcare decisions.
Many realities, including the accessibility of wearable devices and the decreasing costs of sensor technology, have enabled this dramatic growth. Most consumer mobile devices are equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, they can communicate with IT systems. With the rates of chronic diseases that are on the rise, the demand for better treatment options and lower healthcare costs makes it more appealing to utilize new innovations that could provide better healthcare outcomes and efficiencies. The favorable environment ( high-speed internet expansion and access, as well as encouraging government regulatory policies) have also contributed to the growth of IoMT adoption.
Tech Innovation and Caring For The Aging World Population Requires
By 2025, over one-billion people around the world will be elderly. As it is already known, life expectancy has risen quite substantially and elderly people face more healthcare issues, which increase costs. The solution: healthcare [ tech ] innovation making IoMT a reality toward addressing the burdened healthcare system.
Healthcare innovation will enable IoMT devices to provide better ways to care for our elderly that will translate into tremendous potential to help deal with the rising costs of care.
Currently, IoMT devices are already assisting with tracking vital signs, heart performance, monitoring glucose, activity and sleeping levels, helping seniors with getting their prescription and documenting the progress, and beyond. Granted mobility is quite a challenge for the elderly, portable diagnostic devices can make routine blood and other tests (urine) easier on them.
Wearable devices can learn the regular routines of the elderly who wears the device and, if something goes amiss, send a signal to remote caregivers who want to ensure the safety of their loved ones. Wearables can even send alerts if seniors breach their respective parameters. Likewise, these devices can analyze and report findings of tests without requiring the elderly to make a visit to the doctor’s office.
While IoMT ensures adherence to physician’s orders, it is intended to complement the healthcare providers’ work, monitor and gather data and objectively report to the providers accordingly, reduce inefficiencies and waste in the healthcare system. IoMT is also helping Healthcare facilities with monitoring outpatient activities, workflow optimization, inventory management as well as medical device integration.
Some connected devices even go as far as enabling internal surveillance in ways that have never been available before and smart technologies added to medical devices, helping medical teams with monitoring disease progression and even with learning things that could impact future care guidelines and patients.

With the explosion in the number of connected devices, a shift in culture that requires adequate IT systems to handle the data load securely and turning it into actionable insights is rather imperative.
IoMT enables endless potentials to more personalized healthcare for every patient.
